How to Search Cases by Name
The Larimer-filtered Judicial Docket Search offers three routes in one tool: person, business, and attorney. Dates by themselves will not run the search. Pair a date with a party, court, division, attorney, or case number filter. The docket results follow. Type a first and last name for a person. Switch to business mode for a company rather than forcing its name into the person fields.
- Confirm that the matter belongs to Colorado District Court or County Court, not a municipal or federal court.
- Select individual, business, or attorney mode and enter the matching name fields.
- Add a narrow date range and, when known, the courthouse, court type, or division.
- Compare the caption, case number, location, and hearing type before opening or exporting a result.
- Call the correct clerk if spelling changes, date expansion, and jurisdiction checks still produce no match.
Common names pull up unrelated settings fast, so never lean on the name alone. Check the court, case class, and number against a summons, notice, or filing you already have in hand.
Larimer County Case Search Fields
The state portal gives you more than a basic name box. The fields below mirror the controls on the official Larimer County case search. Some appear only after you pick the matching search mode.
| Field Label | Type | Required | Options or Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Judicial District | Dropdown | Optional | Choose a Colorado judicial district. |
| County | Dropdown | Optional | Larimer is preset in the linked search. |
| Courthouse or Court Type | Dropdown | Optional | Options depend on the chosen location. |
| Division | Text | Optional | Narrows the assigned courtroom track. |
| Date Range or Date | Date control | Conditional | A non-date filter is also required. |
| Year, Class, Sequence | Text and dropdown | Optional | Three components of a case number. |
| Individual or Business | Radio | Optional | Controls which party-name fields appear. |
| Attorney name or bar number | Radio and text | Optional | Search by counsel identity. |
Pagination, Printable Version, and Export Results help you manage a long list of matches. An export is only a snapshot of public settings, never a clerk-certified case history.
How to Search by Case Number
A case number is usually the cleanest way in. Colorado's search splits it into a four-digit year, a case class, and a sequence. The model YYYY-CR-SEQUENCE lays out those parts for a District Court criminal class. It does not claim to be a real case's number. Type each piece into its own control. Do not paste a full caption into the name field. The class letter routes the request. CR usually marks District Court criminal matters. CV covers District Court civil, DR domestic relations, PR probate, JV juvenile, M County Court misdemeanor, T County Court traffic, C County Court civil, and S small claims. Menus change over time. When a class looks unfamiliar, confirm the current label on the official screen. Two traps deserve mention. A municipal citation number may follow a city system and fail in the state fields. An appeal can generate a new number instead of extending the first register. If a known number dead-ends at a transfer or appeal, search by caption and court level instead.
Larimer County Case Class Codes
Those letters do more than shorten a number. They point toward the right office and record type. Larimer Combined Court houses both District Court and County Court, yet the two levels hear different matters.
- CR
- District Court criminal, commonly a felony case.
- CV
- District Court civil matter.
- DR or PR
- Domestic relations or probate.
- M or T
- County Court misdemeanor or state traffic.
- C or S
- County civil or small claims.
Juvenile and protected classes can carry public-access limits even when you know the class. A class clue routes the request, but it grants no access by itself.
What a Case Search Shows
The free Larimer County case search shows the court calendar. You can learn when a hearing is set and where it will be held. It may not show pleadings, images, or every step a case has taken, so treat it as a scheduling tool rather than a full record.
| Case number | Year, class, and sequence used to distinguish the matter. |
|---|---|
| Name or caption | The public party label tied to the setting. |
| Date and time | The scheduled start, not proof that the event occurred. |
| Duration | An estimate in minutes, hours, or days. |
| Hearing type | The stage, such as arraignment, pretrial, motions hearing, or trial. |
| Location | Courthouse, appearance type, and courtroom or division. |
The free Larimer County case search returns calendar data. That answers when and where a public setting is scheduled. Pleadings, images, and the full chain of case events do not necessarily appear.
Larimer County Case Search Versus ROA
Colorado reserves "docket" mostly for public settings and uses "Register of Action/ROA" for the clerk's brief chronological case explanation. The distinction matters in practice. A calendar shows a motions hearing, for instance. The ROA places that hearing among filings, minute orders, continuances, disposition, and sentence entries, while a filed motion or signed order is a further layer still.
| Need | Best Larimer Channel | What It Provides |
|---|---|---|
| Upcoming setting | Judicial Docket Search | Public date, time, type, location, and room. |
| Chronological history | ROA request or CoCourts | Event history, subject to access limits. |
| Filed order or pleading | Clerk document request | The selected document, when public. |
| Authenticated record | Certified clerk copy | Official certification for the requested document. |
The official Record/Document Request Form covers ROA requests and certification choices. The ordinary stated response is within three business days unless extenuating circumstances apply, and archived retrieval or redaction can take longer.
County vs Statewide Case Search
Larimer runs no separate county-owned database of state cases. The free Colorado Judicial Branch search is statewide by design, and you can filter it to Larimer. CoCourts/LexisNexis is the Judicial Branch-listed vendor route for broader electronic record searching. Filed documents and certification still come from the clerk.
| Channel | Coverage | Best Use |
|---|---|---|
| Judicial Docket Search | Colorado public court settings, filtered to Larimer | Dates, rooms, appearance type, and hearing labels. |
| CoCourts/LexisNexis | Participating Colorado electronic records | Broader name or case-history research; vendor terms apply. |
| Larimer Combined Court clerk | District and County Court files held locally | ROAs, documents, copies, and certification. |
| Municipal clerk | That city's code and municipal traffic cases | City docket, citation, and municipal records. |
CoCourts is not a certification desk. Check its current price and account terms on the live portal first. When you need an official copy, go back to the originating clerk.
Larimer County Municipal Case Searches
A no-result search often means you knocked on the wrong door. City-code and municipal traffic matters do not have to show up in the state portal. Fort Collins keeps its own gateway for citations, fines, the future docket, and case records. Its Municipal Court stands apart from the Larimer County Justice Center. The official Fort Collins future-docket gateway is the city's search route. It is shown on the official page that follows.
The city interface proves a simple point: identify the issuing court before any Larimer County case lookup begins. The Fort Collins Municipal Court page supplies the city clerk route along with jurisdiction context.
This second city view connects the search tool to the municipal court that holds the record, not to Larimer Combined Court.
Larimer County Case Lookup Boundaries
Ticket color settles Loveland's jurisdiction question fast. A pink ticket or a white electronic ticket is a Loveland Municipal Court case. A blue ticket goes to Larimer County Court. Both courts sit in the same Police and Courts complex, just in different suites. A shared building means nothing. Check which court issued the ticket before anything else. A similar name or address is not proof of venue.
Windsor stretches across Larimer and Weld Counties. Yet a town citation stays with Windsor Municipal Court. The clerk there takes requests and payments online, by phone, by mail, at the counter, or through a drop box. Having the citation number helps staff match a payment to the right court file.
The official Windsor court access summary spells out the municipal channels that appear next.
The point is simple. Go to Windsor itself, not the state's Larimer docket filter, to search or ask about a Windsor ordinance case.
Restricted Cases and Access Rules
Not every case can be searched from home. Chief Justice Directive 05-01 sets the rules for Colorado court-record access. Juvenile records carry extra limits under the Children's Code. Sealed cases stay closed. Larimer staff cannot confirm anything about a sealed case without legal authority. Getting access may take a motion.
Suppressed cases, juvenile files, and protected probate material can require photo identification from the government. They may also require proof you are authorized. Personal identifiers may be blacked out. So a missing result may reflect a legal restriction rather than a broken portal.
Access rule: Use the Colorado public-access directive and the clerk's current instructions for any restricted request.
Ordinary problems hide matches too. A misspelled name, an old file, a municipal case, or a date range that is too narrow can all bury the result, so rule those out before assuming restriction.
Larimer County Older Case Searches
Older and off-site files do not always work like current online settings. Begin with the year, the class, and the sequence number. Then widen the date range and try other spellings of the name. Still nothing? Call the Fort Collins clerk at 970-494-3500 or the Loveland clerk at 970-622-2100. Give the case number if you can.
The clerk can walk you through retrieval and estimate the real off-site costs. Once you know the right destination and total, file through the web form, email, counter, mail, or fax. Note the email addresses. Fort Collins uses 08RecordRequest@judicial.state.co.us, and 08RecordsRequest@judieval.state.co.us is not it. Loveland uses 08RecordsRequest@judicial.state.co.us. That one-letter difference matters.
Note: A search miss is not proof of absence; verify the court, date range, spelling, record age, and access status.
Larimer County Federal Case Searches
Federal matters run on a separate system. A federal civil or criminal case out of Larimer County belongs to the U.S. District Court for the District of Colorado, while bankruptcies go to the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the District of Colorado. PACER is the federal docket and document service. A state Larimer case number gets you nowhere there.
That federal layer is its own world. The Colorado Bankruptcy Court publishes the court page shown next.
The federal court screen stands apart. It is its own custody and search layer, not another tab inside the Larimer County state case lookup.
PACER needs an account. It applies its current federal fee rules. Appeals from the federal district court head to the Tenth Circuit. State District Court appeals, by contrast, generally go through the Colorado Court of Appeals.
Larimer County Case Tracker Limits
The Eighth Judicial District Attorney may offer prosecution-side case tracking. That summary is not the clerk's official record. A Larimer Sheriff arrest report does not establish the court disposition either, and the Sheriff sends disposition questions to Larimer County Court.
Each source has its own job. The prosecutor speaks for the prosecution. The Sheriff keeps law-enforcement records. The Combined Court clerk maintains the state-court ROA, filed orders, and certified copies, while the municipal clerk keeps the city case. Mix those custodians up, and even a working portal can hand you an incomplete result.
